The final countdown
Five days to go before I set off on my 90k journey. People keep asking, 'how long will it take you?' It's a difficult one to answer, so much depends on the weather, the track conditions and how I feel on the day, but I'd be pleased with nine hours.
Have I done enough training? Time will tell but I'm feeling reasonably confident buoyed by my results in the Konig Ludwig Lauf in Germany. On 2nd February I skied the 21k free technique race in 1:38 in difficult, sugary snow conditions, and the following day got my best ever time of 3:23 in the 42k classic race, when conditions were much better.
After a quick trip back to the UK, I came to Kvitavatn in southern Norway where I'm one of the ski leaders for holiday company, Exodus. It's not classic race training but varied track and off-track ski-ing over hilly terrain, so good for general fitness and strength. And I reckon any time spent on snow is valuable when you come from the snowless UK - learn to ski on whatever conditions present themselves and gradually build your snow knowledge.
I travel to Sweden on Saturday, meeting a friend en route. We'll spend Sunday doing the usual pre-race stuff - collecting bibs, maybe having a short ski, agonising over wax choices and seeking out pasta for dinner. And wondering what race day will bring!
